Washington State Department of Transportation—Digital Printing – The Highway to the Future

The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) has taken an innovative approach to maintain the roughly 200,000 road signs across the state. With silk screen printing being the preferred method for a number of years, many print efforts are now turning digital. To navigate this change, WSDOT began to transition the sign shop to a digital print method that helped to eliminate processing time, increased production from 900 square feet of signs to 3,000 square feet of signs with the use recyclable inks, and created a longer lasting product that can withstand the elements. This change provides the department with a sustainable solution, making it possible to keep the community informed for years to come without additional effects to the environment.
