Connecticut Department of Transportation’s $2.5 million bridge replacement project used an innovative bridge construction method known as “Bridge in a Backpack.” This technique accelerated the reconstruction of the bridge that carries Route 57 over the west branch of the Saugatuck River in Weston, and ensured its quality and durability with a 100-year lifespan, saving tax dollars in future maintenance costs. The new bridge was built wider to provide a safer and more pleasant travel experience. The innovative bridge system greatly reduced the project’s duration with minimal disruption to the community.
