Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department’s $125 million project increased safety, mobility and access for the thousands of residents and visitors traveling to commercial and residential districts near Chenal Parkway and Financial Center Parkway in west Little Rock. The interchange improved traffic flow on I-430 and I-630 by installing traffic signals, replacing four bridges, widening ramp connections and constructing a bridge over Shackleford Road and adding three flyover ramps. After crews found a five-million-pound rock formation engineers altered the original design to preserve the natural surroundings, given the interchange its official name. The project was the first in Arkansas history to use traffic microsimulation to plan and model how to install 40 steel bridge beams in 20 days.
