Tennessee Department of Transportation’s $4.5 million investment allocated fund into a statewide program for littler disposal grants available to all 95 counties based on a formula of road miles and population figures. TDOT awarded the grant contracts to county governments for programs encompassing litter pickup, recycling activities and education. Through these grants, volunteers of all ages helped county government officials remove over 20 million pounds of litter from over 400,000 miles of Tennessee roadways, recycle 6.3 million pounds of roadside debris and clean up over 4,000 illegal roadside dumps across the state. The program also helped promote a stronger sense of community and pride as it encouraged residents to volunteer and improve their own quality of life.
