Delaware Department of Transportation’s North Millsboro Bypass

Delaware Department of Transportation’s North Millsboro Bypass (NMB) project originated as part of the U.S. 113 North/South Study, which examined transportation needs along the 38-mile U.S. 113 corridor. The study identified improvements to preserve mobility for local residents and businesses while reducing congestion, improving safety, and accommodating anticipated growth in local, seasonal, and through traffic. Sussex County, including areas in and around the Town of Millsboro, has experienced rapid population growth during the past decade. The $140 million project – decades in the making – provides a critical relief route for traffic through and around the town of Millsboro; reducing congestion and truck traffic at the intersection of US 113 and SR 24 and through the town. Furthermore, the NMB project added new multimodal facilities along the 2.5-mile alignment, including a shared-use path for non-motorized travel. The path provides additional options for pedestrians and bicyclists, particularly recreational users enjoying scenic views of Millsboro Pond. The ultimate benefit to the system users is accessibility to a safe, efficient, multimodal transportation facility that provides critical congestion relief for the town of Millsboro and significant travel time savings for regional traffic as well.
