Pennsylvania Department of Transportation’s Waynesburg Betterment Project improved the city’s historic downtown business district, which had growing safety concerns due to aging infrastructure, worn sidewalks, outdated signals, and tight roadway geometry that no longer kept up with traffic volumes – including a significant number of heavy trucks. Growth in the natural gas industry only added to the issue, increasing freight movement through the corridor and creating conflicts at intersections, while pedestrians were left with limited protection. The $13 million project modernized intersections to improve traffic flow while also creating safer accommodations for pedestrians. It is now easier for trucks and other commercial vehicles to navigate the corridor without creating the same level of congestion or conflict. The project improved connectivity between downtown businesses, residents, and Waynesburg University. The project sets the stage for future pedestrian-focused improvements that will replace deteriorated sidewalks, add lighting, and improve access to the town’s park system. Altogether, the project’s improvements have made the area safer and more efficient, while also strengthening connections between the university, downtown businesses, and the broader region. These investments are helping create a safer, more connected community and a more cohesive transportation network for everyone who lives, works, and visits Waynesburg.
