Maine Department of Transportation’s Newport Roundabout has improved safety and travel predictability for residents, businesses, and visitors using Routes 2 and 7. The $7 million project bolstered safety by addressing a documented pattern of crashes and operational issues at the signalized intersection of Routes 2 and 7 in Newport. The location handled high traffic volumes, complex turning movements, and frequent conflict points that led to angle and rear-end collisions. By converting the intersection to a modern single-lane roundabout, Maine DOT aimed to reduce crash frequency and severity, calm traffic speeds, and improve overall mobility for passenger vehicles, trucks, and local traffic moving through this important junction. Lower vehicle speeds and simplified traffic movements reduce the likelihood and severity of crashes, giving drivers more confidence navigating the intersection. Over time, fewer serious crashes mean lower societal costs and more consistent mobility for workers, customers, and visitors. Maine DOT added that the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act provided safety funds, which played a crucial role in advancing the Newport Roundabout project. That funding helped ensure a high-quality design, improved materials, and minimized delays. The result is a safer, more efficient intersection, enabling Maine DOT to deliver a safety-focused project more quickly than would have been possible with state resources alone.
