New York State Department of Transportation’s Safety and Operational Improvements on Jackie Robinson Parkway project added acceleration lanes at Jamaica Avenue and Highland Boulevard, improving safety and reliability. Frequent rear end and sideswipe crashes stemmed from short merge lengths, limited sight distance, and complex weaving movements within this historic, physically constrained parkway. This transformative $9.6 million project reduced crash risks, improved mobility, and enhanced pedestrian accessibility along a critical urban parkway corridor. Recurring congestion and unreliable travel times further degraded operations in this segment.  Engineering analysis indicates crashes may be reduced by up to 40 percent, particularly rear end and sideswipe collisions. The project also installed Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant curb ramps, refreshed pavement markings, improved lighting, and made streetscape enhancements that improved accessibility and visibility for pedestrians and bicyclists as well. By reducing crashes and recurring congestion and improving travel time reliability, the project enhances mobility for commuters, service vehicles, and emergency responders. Fewer crashes also mean fewer incident-related delays and reduced economic and personal losses from injuries and travel disruptions. Ultimately, those corridor improvements support workforce mobility, enhance regional connectivity, and contribute to a more dependable transportation network that sustains economic activity and community access.
