Maine Department of Transportation’s Route 9/I-395 Connector

Maine Department of Transportation’s I-395/Route 9 Connector improved mobility, safety, and freight efficiency in the Bangor–Brewer region. Prior to construction, traffic between I-395 and Route 9 relied on local roads – Routes 1A, 46, and 9 – which passed through residential areas, creating traffic congestion and safety concerns. The new, six-mile connector provides a direct, higher-speed route for regional traffic and commerce. By relocating commercial truck traffic from downtown Brewer and surrounding communities, this $107 million project redistributed traffic onto a newly constructed roadway that is specifically designed to accommodate larger vehicles more efficiently and safely. By shifting commercial truck traffic off existing corridors, the project reduced wear and tear on local roadways, extending their service life and improving overall system performance. The connector eliminates roundabout routes through residential areas, cutting travel time and fuel use while reducing noise and congestion in nearby communities. It gives freight companies a direct, higher-speed connection that improves delivery reliability statewide, while local residents benefit from quieter, safer streets. It also included the addition of wildlife crossings, restored natural habitats, and improved stream connectivity – preserving over 1,000 acres of wetlands and uplands to compensate for the environmental impacts of this project such as wetland filling and wildlife habitat disruption. Maine DOT added that the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act provided essential federal funding that helped bring the project to life by supporting final design, construction, and project oversight.
