Maryland Department of Transportation’s Concourse A/B Connector and Baggage Handling System

Maryland Department of Transportation’s Concourse A/B Connector and Baggage Handling System provided new passenger amenities and added capacity for Southwest Airlines to continue its growth in Baltimore. The multi-year, $520 million project added a direct connection between concourses A and B, expanded airline gate areas, created new food and retail concession spaces, built new restrooms, and introduced a new, fully in-line baggage handling system for Southwest Airlines. The project’s five modernized airline gate areas feature glass passenger boarding bridges, high-tech electrochromic glass for energy performance control, adjustable accent lighting, and comfortable new seating with integrated charging ports. The project also upgraded the airport’s central utility plant and delivered improvements to the lower-level roadway. As the largest capital improvement in BWI Airport’s history, it marked a major milestone in the airport’s commitment to enhancing the passenger experience and supporting future airline growth.
