New York State Department of Transportation’s NY Route 347 Safety project improved safety and mobility along a highway originally used as a roadway for farmers that now serves as a major highway for daily commuters. NY 347 is a major east-west connector in central Suffolk County for northern communities within this 15-mile corridor, but increased traffic volumes led to increased vehicular crashes and congestion. Those safety-mobility-accessibility problems were addressed by additional travel lanes, increased turning lane capacity, intersection improvements, access management and signal coordination for both Long Island residents and visitors alike. This $278 million modified boulevard project also delivered a shared-use path, upgraded pedestrian facilities, and bus pull-off areas and shelters to facilitate other modes of transportation – enhancing safety for pedestrians, bicyclists, and transit users alike. Through the project’s goal of community interconnectedness, Suffolk County residents are now able to travel via a multimodal shared-use path to community assets including local parks, schools, and medical facilities without having to step foot into a car or bus, which takes vehicles off the road and reduces congestion – especially during peak travel hours. This project also benefitted from over $77 million in obligated funds from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act.
