Maryland Department of Transportation’s “Quick Build” Safety Projects evaluated several travel corridors statewide to identify areas requiring safety improvements for pedestrians, bicyclists, and other vulnerable road users. The $190,000 project used its innovative context-driven approach that considered the uses, needs, and context of a specific area to select which safety improvements might address travel concerns presented by data and the community. Additionally, Maryland DOT worked closely with local jurisdictions and moved quickly to launch pilot projects that allowed the agency to test potential solutions, gather data, and collect user feedback. This “Quick Build” approach enabled Maryland DOT to rapidly deploy test solutions, accelerating the delivery of safety projects while helping the agency identify which safety measures have the greatest impact. Those measures also help promote Maryland’s Complete Streets strategy that benefits main streets and boosts local businesses; supporting a strong quality of life that will draw more people to Maryland.
