Maryland Department of Transportation’s 10 Bridges I-95/I-695 Interchange Rehabilitation Project

Maryland Department of Transportation’s 10 Bridges I-95/I-695 Interchange at the Baltimore Beltway is critical to the transportation needs of the entire region. The Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act provided 90 percent of the funding for this project – which upgraded and modernized 10 bridges on the Baltimore Beltway – which ultimately delivered a safer, smoother ride to the surrounding community. This complex network of ramps and bridges carry 272,000 vehicles daily, which includes residents, commuters, freight trucks, visitors to Baltimore, and users of Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport. Built decades ago, this complex structure required rehabilitation, modernization, and safety upgrades. The latex modified concrete also helps protect internal steel reinforcing of the bridge deck from corrosion. Specifically, the team utilized latex-modified concrete overlays and full-depth deck replacements with a specialized concrete mix to improve service life and enhance freeze-thaw resistance. The project’s construction techniques allowed work to continue without long-term lane closures, significantly reducing disruptions for the local community and traveling public. In addition, the $42.3 million project was completed ahead of schedule and under budget, further minimizing construction impacts.
