Massachusetts Department of Transportation’s Reconstruction of Route 20 in Charlton and Oxford

Massachusetts Department of Transportation’s Route 20 project significantly enhanced safety by adding a median, eliminating the risk of serious crossover crashes, and making turning movements and access along the corridor much safer.

The $105 million project also added bicycle and pedestrian accommodations, providing safer options for active transportation along a corridor that previously had none. Additional upgrades included replacing two bridges, reconstructing a signalized intersection, and building a new roundabout, all while maintaining acceptable operations for local and regional traffic.

Beyond safety, the project supported economic development in the community. The Town of Charlton received a $2.8 million MassWorks Infrastructure Program grant to extend an existing sewer main along Route 20, and the project activated a previously unused water main for 1.2 miles west of Bay Bath Road. Overall, the Route 20 reconstruction transformed a dangerous corridor into a safer, more efficient roadway while strengthening critical infrastructure and creating new economic opportunities for Charlton and the Commonwealth.
