Idaho Transportation Department’s East Idaho Interchange Drives Community Growth project replaced a 1960s-era interchange between I-15 and I-86 in Bannock County, Idaho. The I15/I86 System Interchange in the city of Pocatello had become outdated due to aging bridges and an outdated design that needed to be updated for modern traffic flow. Notably, the interchange had left-side merge movements at two locations that often confused drivers, leading to sudden lane changes and speed shifts that increased crash risk. This $123 million replacement project reconstructed the interchange to eliminate these safety concerns and modernize traffic operations. This large-scale initiative maintained traffic flow as well as expanded accommodations for alternative modes of transportation. Enhancements included improved connectivity along the Portneuf Greenway and the replacement of an overpass with an underpass at Chubbuck Road to better serve bicyclists and pedestrians.
