Nebraska Department of Transportation’s US-30 Grand Island Project realigned U.S. 30 along the western edge of Grand Island to better serve a growing community while improving safety, supporting economic development, and preserving landowner value. As Grand Island expanded, particularly after becoming home to the Nebraska State Fair, traffic volumes increased significantly on what had once been a rural two-lane highway running parallel to a rail line. These changes highlighted the need for a safer, higher-capacity transportation corridor.

Following an extensive planning and public engagement process, NDOT determined that relocating the highway and improving access management offered the most effective long-term solution. The project shifted U.S. 30 to a less developed corridor, expanded the roadway from two lanes to four, and consolidated access through controlled intersections. This approach eliminated numerous uncontrolled and angled access points that had emerged as development intensified, while also improving emergency response access that had previously been hindered by the adjacent rail line.

Significant efforts were made to minimize property impacts and reduce construction-related disruptions, resulting in improved connectivity without adversely affecting existing neighborhoods or businesses. The new alignment safely accommodates growing traffic volumes and supports major regional destinations, including the Nebraska State Fair, Husker Harvest Days, and other attractions that draw visitors from across the region.

By improving safety, increasing roadway capacity, and strengthening access to key economic and tourism destinations, the project positions U.S. 30 to meet Grand Island’s transportation needs for decades to come while supporting continued community growth and economic vitality.
