The Exit 161 project was designed to accommodate current and future traffic growth driven by ongoing residential and business development, replace an aging bridge, and improve operations at nearby intersections. Prior to construction, the $47.5 million corridor experienced significant congestion during peak travel periods, largely caused by two left-turn movements that created substantial backups and ramp queuing.

The redesigned interchange eliminates those conflict points by converting the left turns into looped right-turn movements, reducing delays, improving traffic flow, and enhancing safety. Although the project is nearing final completion, it is already delivering measurable benefits, including significantly reduced congestion at the interchange and the nearby Miriam and Trenton intersections.

The reconstruction project replaces aging infrastructure, improves mobility along a key Bismarck corridor, and supports future growth through a collaboratively developed design that enhances traffic operations for years to come. Funded through Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act federal bridge funding, along with a state match, the project improves efficiency, reliability, and connectivity while strengthening the community’s long-term economic vitality and quality of life.
