South Dakota Department of Transportation’s Diverging Diamond Interchange in Brandon, South Dakota, improves safety and mobility while accommodating the community’s rapid growth. As traffic volumes increased and the existing interchange could no longer safely or efficiently meet demand, the diverging diamond design was selected to reduce conflict points, improve traffic flow, and enhance access to Interstate 90.

Brandon’s population grew by more than 25% between 2010 and 2020 and is projected to continue growing. In response, the $41 million project was designed to meet both current and future transportation needs. The interchange improves access to nearby businesses, provides safer travel for motorists, pedestrians, and bicyclists, and supports more efficient freight movement, including oversized loads critical to manufacturing and clean energy industries.

Funded in part through Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act formula funding, the project delivers safer and more efficient interstate access while supporting economic growth and enhancing quality of life for residents and visitors alike.
