Indiana Department of Transportation’s Connected Vehicle Analytics for Identification and Prioritization of Safety Projects uses hard-braking data from connected vehicles, collected since 2020, to proactively identify and prioritize safety improvements in both construction zones and across the broader network. 

Those same techniques are now being used to process approximately 180 billion connected vehicle records each year to identify emerging “hot spots” for hard braking. This corresponds to approximately one in 20 vehicles on Indiana roads.  Each record contains location, speed, and heading that are ingested into the google “big query” engine that allows INDOT to derive hard braking events and map geographic “hot spots” for further analysis. 

Additionally, these techniques include severity of hard braking, as well as absolute and normalized hard braking values. This $700,000 initiative allows INDOT to consider not only interstates, but also rural low volume areas that are often hard to identify with crash data.
