The Kansas Department of Transportation’s Safety Scorecard project replaced paper reporting with a web-based system that allows staff statewide to submit information more easily and review and analyze safety data in real time. Before implementing its digital Safety Scorecard, Kansas DOT tracked safety-related incidents using paper reports and manual data entry.

Reports took days to compile, and information was recorded differently from one user to another. Inconsistent reporting prevented reliable comparison of information between districts and limited the ability to identify patterns across the state.

Since implementation of the Safety Scorecard, Kansas DOT has seen a 32 percent reduction in recordable injuries, including injuries that require medical treatment or time away from work; helping staff identify patterns and address safety risks earlier. At no cost, standardizing how information is recorded improves accuracy, strengthens data quality and reduces the time needed to prepare reports, the agency said.
