Wisconsin Department of Transportation’s I894, 84th to 35th Street project repaved a key 3.3mile section of the six-lane highway. This $61 million corridor is an integral part of the Milwaukee County freeway system, serving as a primary route for commuters and freight and providing critical access to and from General Mitchell International Airport. 

The deteriorating condition of the I-894 pavement required a full-depth replacement of nearly 12 percent of the surface area, an increase in the pavement section, and a reconstruction of the median and outside shoulders. The project also rehabilitated 10 of I-894’s service ramps that connect the freeway with the local municipalities and also rebuilt the Loomis Road bridge over I-894, providing the community with a safer bridge for one of the primary local interchanges in the area. 

The I-894 rehabilitation project also used extended weekend full freeway closures to enable echelon asphalt paving across the high-volume, six-lane urban freeway in lieu of traditional staged, overnight construction by accelerating delivery, improving pavement quality, and enhancing safety and efficiency for the department, contractors, and stakeholders.  Using federal funds, $31 million came from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act; helping the project to advance.
