Alabama Department of Transportation’s Tuscaloosa County US-82 Widening Enhancements

Alabama Department of Transportation’s Tuscaloosa County US‑82 Widening and Enhancements project bolstered mobility, boosted multimodal access, and strengthened long‑term economic growth for the Tuscaloosa and Northport communities. US‑82 is a critical economic corridor for West Alabama, serving major retail, service, and employment centers and carrying high daily traffic volumes and this $37.39 million project added an additional travel lane in each direction, improved access management, and enhanced overall functionality for this roadway corridor. Those improvements reduced traffic congestion, improved travel reliability, and created safer access for drivers, businesses, and nearby neighborhoods. Residents now experience shorter travel times and more consistent traffic flow along one of the region’s most heavily traveled routes. The addition of a shared‑use path is a key feature of this roadway project; generating new transportation options for pedestrians and bicyclists while creating a more balanced, inclusive transportation network for users of all ages and abilities. By improving traffic flow and access, the project makes the corridor more attractive to existing businesses while encouraging new commercial investment, reinforcing US‑82’s role as a vital link for economic activity and regional connectivity.
