West Virginia Department of Transportation’s Snowshoe Resort Air Service Advanced Mobility Project is an early step toward improving access to the state’s tourism destinations through a private‑sector partnership with Electra’s advanced air mobility (AAM) technology. Launched in December 2025, the $15,000 initiative uses electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) air service to bypass challenging mountain roadways while providing faster, and more direct connections from regional airports to destinations like Snowshoe Resort. These eVTOL aircraft are electric‑powered vehicles capable of taking off and landing vertically, allowing them to operate without traditional runways while flying more quietly and efficiently than helicopters. By improving access, the project aims to boost visitation, increase local spending, and create jobs in hospitality, aviation support, and related services. For rural communities, such AAM services offers new revenue opportunities and greater connectivity without the need for costly infrastructure expansion. Beyond tourism, the project also supports access to critical supplies, including medical deliveries, highlighting the value of multimodal transportation solutions for remote and underserved areas while positioning West Virginia to lead in next‑generation aviation innovation.
