Department data indicate that 2021 was the most dangerous year in recent history for work zone incidents, with 2,594 crashes recorded statewide. One of the latest and most innovative measures is the deployment of artificial intelligence or AI‑powered handheld device detection cameras. Costing $200,000 per camera system, the initiative uses artificial intelligence to identify drivers holding a cell phone or other handheld device within a work zone. When a violation is detected, an alert is sent to a law enforcement officer stationed downstream, allowing the driver to be safely stopped after exiting the work zone. By applying advanced AI technology to address distracted driving, ARDOT is demonstrating leadership and innovation in protecting road workers and the traveling public while advancing safer work zones statewide.
