Florida Department of Transportation’s Systemwide Queue Warning Implementation Project proactively alerts drivers to sudden slowdowns, reducing crashes and improving safety and travel reliability across Florida’s Turnpike System. Traditional monitoring methods could not consistently detect or communicate these hazards quickly enough across the extensive, high-speed system. To address this challenge, Florida DOT implemented a systemwide, automated queue warning solution that identifies slowing or stopped traffic in real time and alerts drivers through Dynamic Message Signs and FL511. The system integrates traffic detection, automated queue identification algorithms, and coordinated messaging into a single platform, eliminating the need for manual Traffic Management Center intervention. It combines closed-circuit televisions, microwave vehicle detection systems, fiber-optic communications, enterprise sensors, and third-party probe data to create a scalable, proactive safety network. The system has delivered measurable safety benefits across multiple regions. In its first year, rear-end crashes decreased 14.8 percent along the Treasure Coast, 22.3 percent in Central Florida, and 11.1 percent in West Central Florida. Real-time end-of-queue warnings allow drivers to brake earlier and more safely, reducing secondary crashes and smoothing traffic flow. For operators, the system improves situational awareness and enables faster incident response. By reducing crashes, delays, and fuel consumption, the project enhances travel reliability for commuters, freight carriers, and visitors while supporting regional commerce, tourism, and overall quality of life across Florida communities.
