Georgia Department of Transportation’s Day One Deployment District is a real‑world, scalable initiative that demonstrates how connected vehicle technology can work with existing infrastructure to improve safety and mobility. Located in downtown Atlanta – an area experiencing rapid growth, congestion, and increasing multimodal demands – the $1.3 million project bridges today’s transportation system with vehicle‑to‑everything (V2X) technology to deliver immediate operational benefits. Launched on August 2025, during the Intelligent Transportation Systems World Congress, the Day One Deployment District served as a live demonstration of V2X in action. Traffic signals across the district were upgraded to better support transit and emergency vehicles, helping them move through intersections more safely and efficiently. These enhancements directly benefit services such as the MARTA Summerhill Bus Rapid Transit line.

The system also collects real‑time traffic data, giving transportation teams better insight to manage operations and improve safety. In addition, Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) technology detects pedestrians and other vulnerable road users, allowing signals to adjust crossing times and delay turning movements when needed. This improves safety and creates a more balanced street environment for all users. The project was fully supported by Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act funding, which allows 100 percent federal coverage for vehicle‑to‑infrastructure equipment. By leveraging 93 existing signalized intersections and previously deployed communications systems, Georgia DOT avoided costly upgrades and accelerated deployment. The Day One Deployment District serves as a national model, positioning Georgia as a leader in connected vehicle innovation while strengthening safety, mobility, and economic competitiveness statewide.
