West Virginia Department of Transportation’s Frank “Gunner” Gatski Memorial Bridge (East Huntington Bridge) project bolsters bridge management through a scalable, risk‑based structural health monitoring system that enables proactive, real‑time decision‑making to enhance safety, resilience, and reliability. The $812,000 project addresses a national infrastructure challenge with funding made possible from U.S. Department of Transportation SMART grants as well as the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. Through that federal funding, WVDOT deployed an innovative structural health monitoring system on this iconic cable‑stayed bridge, integrating modular wireless Internet-of-Things or IoT sensors, continuous data collection, and real‑time analytics. The system enables early detection of deterioration, rapid post‑event assessment, and predictive maintenance – capabilities not achievable under conventional inspection methods. Continuous monitoring reduces the risk of sudden closures that disrupt daily commutes, emergency response, and freight movement, minimizing delays, rerouting impacts, and economic costs. Enhanced situational awareness during routine operations and extreme events improves safety and public confidence while supporting supply chain reliability.
