South Carolina Department of Transportation’s SC 290 Diverging Diamond Interchange project turned the I‑85 and SC 290 (Exit 63) interchange into a safer, more efficient transportation facility that improves traffic flow and reduces congestion in Spartanburg County. The $21.8 million project addressed growing traffic volumes, inefficient operations, and safety concerns that strained the outdated interchange design, particularly for left‑turn movements entering and exiting I‑85. Increasing demand had led to frequent delays and heightened crash risk caused by multiple conflict points. To resolve these issues without the cost and disruption of full reconstruction, SCDOT implemented one of the state’s first Diverging Diamond Interchanges (DDI). This innovative design temporarily shifts traffic to the opposite side of the roadway, allowing left‑turning vehicles to enter highway ramps without crossing opposing traffic. The result is fewer conflict points, smoother traffic movements, and improved safety. The DDI significantly increased interchange capacity while minimizing construction impacts and costs by leveraging existing infrastructure. Motorists now benefit from reduced delays, improved reliability, and safer left‑turn access onto and off I‑85. Sidewalk improvements also enhanced pedestrian connectivity through the interchange. Beyond operational improvements, the project supports economic growth by improving access to I‑85, a major regional freight corridor.
