South Carolina Department of Transportation’s Hurricane Helene Bridge Replacements project rapidly restored critical transportation links by replacing nine severely damaged bridges following Hurricane Helene. The $41.26 million initiative was essential after the hurricane caused bridge closures that disrupted travel, created lengthy detours, and limited access to key destinations. Immediate action was required to protect public safety, support emergency response, and reconnect impacted communities in the cities of Spartanburg, Greenville, Greenwood, Oconee, and York counties. Working in coordination with federal and local partners, SCDOT expedited bridge replacements to restore mobility as quickly as possible. Each closure had unique community impacts. Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act funding, strengthened by the Federal Highway Administration’s Emergency Relief program, enabling resiliency improvements and faster project delivery. Using a design‑build approach, SCDOT minimized disruptions, restored access to jobs, schools, healthcare, and recreational destinations such as Jones Gap State Park, and accelerated community recovery. Throughout the process, the department maintained regular public updates and direct outreach while delivering safer, more reliable infrastructure.
