Mississippi Department of Transportation’s I‑10 Diamondhead Interchange Improvement project turned a chronically congested and hazardous interchange into a safer, more efficient “dogbone” double‑roundabout configuration. The $17 million redesign streamlined traffic flow, eliminated interstate backups, and provides Diamondhead residents with reliable access to and from I‑10. Delivered using an innovative three-dimensional design approach, the project maximized safety and operational efficiency while remaining within the existing footprint. Beyond traffic operations, the project significantly enhanced multimodal connectivity. A new 10‑foot‑wide multimodal path across the I‑10 overpass now allows residents to safely travel between the north and south sides of Diamondhead on foot or by golf cart for the first time. This connection strengthens community ties and encourages alternative transportation options. Capacity was further improved by widening all interstate ramps and the existing overpass, improving vehicle movements during peak periods.

The project was made possible through Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act funding, specifically National Highway Performance Program funds. By using existing right‑of‑way and avoiding a full overpass closure, construction impacts were minimized and local access maintained. Improved access makes commuting safer and faster, enhances Diamondhead’s appeal as a residential community, and supports economic development, especially as a nearby I‑10 widening project increases regional capacity and speeds goods to market.
