Louisiana Department of Transportation’s LA 47 Intracoastal Waterway Gulf Outlet Bridge Rehabilitation restored reliability to a vital transportation corridor that supports daily commuters, local businesses, and port-related economic activity. The LA 47 IWGO Bridge, constructed in 1967, is a critical regional connector in St. Bernard Parish serving commuters, freight, and maritime-related traffic. Over time, structural steel deterioration, aging expansion joints, coating failure, and deck deficiencies threatened long-term performance and reliability. Rather than replace the bridge, LADOTD implemented a strategic rehabilitation program that maximized the value of the existing structure. Detailed inspections and early bridge washing improved defect identification, enabling targeted steel repairs, joint replacement, deck rehabilitation, and protective coating restoration. This approach extended service life, reduced lifecycle costs, and preserved traffic operations. Federal surface transportation funding authorized under the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act supported the rehabilitation of this critical bridge. IIJA funding enabled LADOTD to implement a proactive, inspection-driven rehabilitation strategy rather than defer repairs, preventing further deterioration and higher future costs.
