Tennessee Department of Transportation’s SR 67 Broad Street Bridge project restored a vital sense of normalcy and connectivity after Hurricane Helene devastated the region. Catastrophic flooding severely damaged the historic bridge, isolating neighborhoods and disrupting daily travel, emergency access, and local commerce. In response, Tennessee DOT used a rapid Progressive Design‑Build approach to stabilize, lift, and reopen this critical community connection. Support from Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act funding allowed Tennessee DOT to act quickly while prioritizing long‑term reliability. Rather than replacing the structure, the department chose to preserve the bridge. Engineers stabilized the structure and incrementally lifted it 4.3 inches to restore proper alignment. During a carefully controlled two‑day jacking operation, the bridge was raised at approximately one‑quarter inch per hour, returning it near its original elevation. This innovative approach shortened closures, reduced disruption, and accelerated recovery. Once reopened, residents regained familiar travel routes, emergency response times improved, and businesses reconnected with customers. The $6.6 million project demonstrates how targeted investment and innovative delivery can speed disaster recovery, preserve historic infrastructure, and bolster community resilience.
