District Department of Transportation’s $16 million reconstruction of the structurally deficient 16th Street Bridge improved safety, access and mobility to the more than 50,000 commuters and 20,000 bus passengers who use it every day. Crews used innovative bridge construction methods to build pre-cast components off-site and transport them to the work site when they were ready for installation, keeping traffic moving until they closed the bridge for one weekend to safely transition traffic from the old bridge to the new one. This innovative approach shortened the construction schedule by six months and helped open the bridge two weeks early, minimizing impacts to the public.
