Maine Department of Transportation – Expansion of Portland’s International Marine Terminal

Maine Department of Transportation’s $9.5 million marine terminal project will increase new rail container service to New York and southern New England offering a cost-effective alternative to transporting freight by truck along I-95, and reduce freight traffic on this already busy interstate. As part of the project, crews installed 5,000 feet of new railroad track, and constructed a loading pad for shipping containers in preparation for a new cold storage facility. This investment improves the state’s economy and the quality of life of Portland’s residents by providing safety, connectivity and mobility via a new multi-use trail, a tree-lined esplanade with landscaping and bike lanes throughout the 1,650-foot length of the project.
