Massachusetts Department of Transportation – Kenneth F. Burns Memorial Bridge Replacement

Massachusetts Department of Transportation’s $105 million bridge project increased safety, quality of life and travel options by replacing a deteriorating bridge carrying Route 9 over Lake Quinsigamond between Shrewsbury and Worcester. Improvements included the reconstruction of one intersection, a new traffic roundabout, utility relocations, better signalization, new drainage, street and decorative lighting, sidewalks, bike lanes and pedestrian ramps. Bridge work was expedited using accelerated construction techniques to reduce environmental and traffic impacts and to allow two lanes of traffic in each direction with enough clearance for boat passage underneath.
