Massachusetts Department of Transportation’s $3.7 million 11-mile reconstruction of the Norwottuck Branch of the Mass Central Rail Trail enhanced safety and mobility linking people to the heart of the Pioneer Valley, connecting them to Northampton, Hadley, Amherst and Belchertown. Crews minimized their environmental footprint using a pre-cast concrete boardwalk to mitigate wetland impacts and reduce maintenance costs. They also added a signage system to enhance safety and travel experience, and interpretive waysides and pull-outs to encourage recreational activities and people’s connection with the environment. The trail minimizes environmental impacts and enhances safety for the people it serves.
