Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities’ $59 million project increased overall safety at the Kodiak Airport by extending the length of highly used runway areas. To accomplish the task at the geographically constrained airport crews implemented the use of an engineered material arresting system to reduce lengths of the runway extensions and mitigate impacts to the wildlife habitats and the Gulf of Alaska. Crews solved many logistical challenges and worked through sub-arctic maritime rain, wind, strong storms, and high tides to ensure uninterrupted airport service for air carriers, general and commercial flights, and the US Coast Guard.
