Arizona Department of Transportation’s $25 million project near Page, improved mobility and quality of life by reestablishing connectivity to local communities after a landslide in early 2013 buckled over 150 feet of US 89, creating a 160-mile detour for Lake Powell visitors. After an extensive geo-technical analysis, crews cut back the mountain slope and built a rock buttress to stabilize the roadway, and removed one million cubic yards of rock material to realign a 1,500-foot road segment and improve transportation safety. Completing the reconstruction ahead of schedule restored faster access to jobs, schools and recreational areas, which are vital to the region’s economic vitality.
