Georgia Department of Transportation’s $14 million project in Albany replaced an aging bridge over the Flint River to increase access, safety and mobility while preserving its historic character. Crews constructed the bridge using the segmental balanced cantilever construction method for the first time to expedite its construction, minimize impacts and restore needed connectivity. The project added bike lanes, sidewalks, lighting and several other aesthetic features to enhance safety and travel experience. The bridge exemplified how the department and residents worked together to preserve the park, river views and the crossing’s history while honoring World War I veterans.
